Check battery voltage, 12.7, check voltage at starter wire, disconnected, 12.6. Jumped starter and still same slow cranking.

Trying to start a 318 that I recently bought. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get it to run. Now to diagnose the problem.

Mount the points and rotate the crankshaft using a wrench on the front bolt that holds the pto pulley in place. Set the maximum gap to 0.020". A couple online Deere parts stores sell the Deere/NGK plug and show “standard gap .025” in description. However, the 2238 comes pre-gapped at .040, and NGK recommends not altering the gap by more than .008. Arrgh!
