Resetting the DEF. So I have a 2012 Duramax. The DEF fluid got low. It read 200 miles remaining. So I put more DEF fluid in. It held 1.5 gallons. Which is not enough to fill the tank on that. Still reads 200 miles remaining. I have tried resetting it via the check button that resets everything else but no luck.
Service Emissions System warning came on this morning at the start of a long trip. Figured it was a regen thing as the car had been only grocery getting for a bit. However, 2+ hours of driving later and it's not going away. Disconnect the chassis side fuel feed hose (3) from the engine side fuel feed pipe (4). Place the end of the chassis side fuel feed hose into a clean container and run the fuel pump to clean any debris left in the fuel lines, approximately 2-3 gallons (7.6-11.4L). Clean the fuel/water separator reservoir.
Okay, speed is limited in warning levels 5 through 8, so that is where you are. This means that you cannot reset by driving. You will need to do a stationary reset. It ran fine for the first 3,200 miles then upon startup this evening after filling up at the Shell fuel station in Frederick, MD off I-270/85, it immediately threw up the yellow engine warning icon and said "Service Emmissions System", see owner's manual, 175 mile limit and 65 mph max speed. Blew computers mind, had to take it to dealer to clear and reset and informed me to always shut it off. It helps sensors reset and register the def level quicker.
