Valvoline, Castrol, NAPA, etc. GL-5 gear lubes are all fine, there's not a gear lube sold at NAPA I wouldn't run. Personally I run Valvoline. A 75W-90, 80W-90, 70W-80, 80W-120, etc. are all fine... the axle is not fussy about its exact viscosity. I personally prefer a conventional gear lube over a synthetic for the axles.

It's a full float axle so the gear lube also lubricates the rear wheel bearings. It's from a 1975 w200 so I don't know if it has a limited slip differential or needs a modifier but could be wrong? I live in a climate of wide temperature ranges. The typical GL-5 80W90/85W90 and the 85W140 hypoid-type gear lubes are really too viscous for the Dana 20/300 transfer cases. And the EP additives may be detrimental to some of the transfer case internal parts. The days of 20w-50 for engines and 75w-140 for gears are long gone. Oils are so superior nowadays don't be afraid to use lighter grades if thats whats called for.

I use this same lube in the 9.25" and 11.5" AAM axles in the 2005 Ram 3500 4WD truck.If it's a '75, it will be a 9 1/4", it will have the 5 on 4.5" bolt pattern, as will the '77 model axle and any other 1/2 ton axle built between '75 and '79. In '80 they went back to the larger 5 on 5.5" bolt pattern. You can swap parts but if you swap the entire axle you will end up with mismatched wheel patterns.
