If you are familiar with the gun the safety location will come second nature. I have never got by thumb hung under the shell lifter either. Both Remington and Mossberg are fine pieces. Either one will serve you well. I just prefer the 870 over the 500 series Mossberg, and I like the M37 Ithaca better than the 870.

Bought a higher end Remington 870 in 2008. You could watch it rust in front of your eyes and I can't count the # of FTE failures it had. Sold it in 2010, bought an older police turn in 870, never been happier.
