I have a 98 Prairie 400 that had a strange thing happen. Had been running fine, went to start it, got a brief flash of the panel lights then nothing. Checked main fuse, and the holder seemed like it wasn't holding the fuse properly, so I fixed that. Still no joy. Replaced main relay, still no joy.

I just had the same problem on my Twin Peaks (aka Prairie 700) and it turned out to be the fan switch sensor that is screwed into the side of the radiator. Before you do anything else, you should run 12V directly to the fan to make sure its working properly. If the fan is good and the fuse is not ...if you a volt meter check the power of the battery,it should be about 12volts. with it not running.but if it is 9.5 v to lower replace the battery. now if its running the voltage should only be about 13-14 volts.any higher then the voltage regulater is prolly faulty and in need of replacemet. oh yeah and get some new bulbs for the lights after ...

If that's the case, WD40 will sometimes loosen them. If you look at the module with the terminals pointing down, the two on the left go to the pickup coil (black and blue on my '86).

The bearings are usually about the last thing to fail on a Prairie 400. I would check the cam chain tightener and adjust it according to the manual. Set the valve lash to proper clearances, as I would guess it is overdue too. Also, I would pull the belt converter cover and check the belt and clutches for wear.
If I recall correctly, I don't think the '99 400 has any detents in the shifter and linkage system, so Camo Joe is right. Unhook the linkage; if it still pops out of gear, then it's an internal problem. If it doesn't, then look at the shfter and linkage (and motor mounts) again. 2002 698 Prairie.
