The rover can get sucked into the cores/pillars gravity well easily and can be difficult to get free. Once you have Princess, a drill mod 3, and a portable oxygenator, you can simply drill straight down and drop into the core. Takes less than 60 seconds. Jetpack. Boost before you land, with enough time to slow down.
So the best way I found is to get to the core and then see what you need, then drop all the important stuff on the ground in the core, then you die grab what you need and just go back to the core. Most important here, to me, was saving the drill mod so I didn't have to make it again.
