At first it was running great, and we were cruising around getting to know the boat as well as the lake. Re: 1989 150 mecury black max XR2. My 88 XR4 is a 2.4 wid a clamshell cowl. I think the difference between them is XR2 is 2.0l, XR4 is 2.4l. XR6 is 2.5l. They are all strong 150's. XR2 and XR4 came with 4 1/4 in lowers. Either will only allow the fuel pump to flow a limited amount of fuel, no where near enough to make much power. What you should have on the rectifier is 5 wires. 2 yellows, 2 reds, and a gray. (it is possible that you have 1 extra black wire, and if you do, it's a ground). OK first put the thermostats back in. The thermostats restrict and control the amount of water around the cylinder head. If you run without thermostats the water is circulating too fast and doesn't allow the cylinder head to run at the proper temperature and doesn't allow the cooling water to take the heat from the engine.

Your adding 6 gal of fuel with a quart of oil made roughly a 25:1 mix.
