You are correct that a 94 is of later production than the 1894. It depends on a few other things such as barrel roll stamp, bullseye on butt stock or not and butt plate to name a few. I also have a 4 digit serial model 94 in 44-40. The link I provided put it at the early 20's with all the info I gave.

But it only had a 4 digit serial number located under the lever handle on the bottom tang, 3367.
