I used magic to get the initial gear for ranging. Clearing the ice dungeon gets you access to ranged str gear and the ice longbow. My ranged weapon progression was something like old hunting bow -> ice longbow -> elerine longbow -> ancient hunting bow. I mass produced mithril arrows for the initial levels.
