A Bard might feel obligated to double down on their support/buff niche, which makes sense considering they're the best in the system at it, so while I feel giving them items that take this up a notch with bonuses to Performance and such is a good choice as you mentioned, but perhaps things that expand their versatility might be even better, particularly wands.
